As several foreign friends of mine are wondering what I am writing every day, I decided to writ this article in English. I will use some bad words, I hope you don’t mind. I also hope you don’t mind if my English is a little bit poor but this year my brain is full of Chinese which makes it complicated to switch to this language.
In the next week, on October 1st, China is going to celebrate its 60th birthday and to prepare for this event, everybody buys flags to decorate the houses and one can really feel the rise of national pride. But today, I think, national pride turns to kind of racism.
It all begins at lunch time. We don’t have any lessons today and so we are arriving relatively late at 12:45 pm in the canteen. Lukas and I have to charge our canteen-cards. The charging-station closes at 1:00 pm, but as they are a bit lazy, they already prepare to close earlier. I am lucky and they take my 200 Yuan and charge my card. Lukas is waiting right behind me but when my card is charged, they just close the fucking window, pointing at the fucking clock at the wall that does not show the correct time. “Open the fucking window, lady! It’s not yet 1 pm.” But no chance.
Suddenly, five Chinese people appear behind us, having the same intention as we do. And suddenly the window is open again and three of their cards are being charged but as soon as Lukas is appearing in front of the window, it’s closed again. We have to come back another day. Fuck that.
Luckily my card is charged and we don’t have to starve today.
In the afternoon we call the Chinese office of the Lufthansa in Shanghai to change the date of our flight-tickets back to Germany, that we issued last year in October. That day we were told we can change the date once without having to pay anything. However, the fucking Lufthansa-Office in Shanghai does not seem to know anything about that, they are demanding a payment of 100 Euro. Fuck that, we will call the office in Germany another day.
In the evening we are going back to the canteen, again relatively late (all the other students having lunch at 6:00 pm, we are arriving at 6:45 pm. They should be happy that we are not complaining, that our food is already cold but still pay the full price. But they are not happy. They still want to make some money by saving some energy by switching the light off in the area we are sitting and still eating. “Lady, would you please switch on the fucking light again?” No. All the lady, a pretty beautiful one, does is smiling spitefully in our direction.
There is nothing like doing things yourself and I myself go over to switch the fucking lights on again. The canteen working-staff is looking at me but is too afraid to challenge me again. Of course I am a good man and switch off the light when we are leaving but to show my anger I am not willing to clean my table for them.
To calm down, we are following the invitation of an ex-Prof of our institute that I met at the Bierfest in the Sofitel to come to his bar that he just opened a few months ago. On the map it appears not being too difficult to reach it but in fact we have a long ride in the taxi as our map is old and the area of the bar has just been constructed. We get a beer and a cocktail. Denis’ cocktail contains orange juice. The orange juice bottle nearly explodes as it’s opened but nobody believes us that this might be an indication for the orange juice being bad. But Denis survives his drink.
Than we are moving to the Salsa with the intention to be the last ones on the dancefloor. But we are not allowed to enter the club as we don’t have any passports. Fuck that! Why are ‘minors’ supposed to carry passports all the time? They are too valuable and too big, they just do not fit in any Jeans pockets. Again we feel like victims of racism.
But why should we be annoyed about the Salsa, we just cross the road and go to the 爱上-Club. The name means something like ‘in love’ so we hope to be welcome in here. And we are. More than just welcome. The man who introduces himself as being the manager uses the few minutes of time that Denis and Philipp are on the toilet to tell me how handsome I am. Three times. I am thankful that not everybody turned to be kind of a racist, however I quickly order some beers, hoping he disappears as I am embarrassed by this situation.
